RedHawks Remain in Fourth Place After Day Three of MAC Championships
Feb. 22, 2008 BUFFALO, N.Y. - Sophomore Karen Frazier notched Miami's first top finish of the Mid-American Conference Championships with a win in the 100 breaststroke and Miami University's women's swimming and diving team remained within 70 points of first place and closed within 10 points of third place after day three of competition. Freshman Kelsey Vehr got the RedHawks off to a solid start with a fourth-place finish in the 400 individual medley. Vehr clocked in at 4:24.99 and that finish gave Miami 15 points. Freshman Megan Brunn added a 14th place finish with a time of 4:33.26. The RedHawks made a big move in the 100 butterfly as three RedHawks qualified for the `A' final. Freshman Nicole Roddenbery touched the wall in a time of 55.47, giving her a fourth-place finish. Senior Kathryn Stephens and sophomore Allison Way clocked in with times of 56.27 and 56.82, respectively, as they earned seventh and eighth-place finishes. Roddenbery, Stephens and Way scored 38 points collectively in the 100 butterfly. Junior Allison Stevens kept Miami's string of top-five finishes in tact with a fourth-place time of 1:50.27 in the 200 freestyle. Senior Kristen Bezier tacked on six more points with a time of 1:52.19 as she took 11th place. Frazier snatched Miami's first top-finish of the MAC Championships when she won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.18. Miami racked up more points as Vehr notched her second top-five finish of the evening with a fifth-place time of 1:04.86 and Brunn finished in eighth place, recording a time of 1:06.10. Miami's 45 points in the event closed the RedHawks within 17 points of Eastern Michigan for 3rd place.
Junior Malarie Schmidt, junior Alyson Schmidt and Roddenbery registered ninth, 10th and 16th place finishes, respectively, in the 100 backstroke, which tied Miami for 3rd place overall with Eastern Michigan. However, the RedHawks finished in fourth place in the 400 medley relay, which kept Miami in fourth place overall after day three. After three days of competition, Toledo and Ohio are tied in first place with 426.5 points apiece, followed by Eastern Michigan with 366 points and Miami with 356 points. Saturday is the final day of competition and seven events remain.
