ATHENS, Ohio - Junior Tommy Nurre hit two home runs and drove in a career-high seven runs, but six Ohio University home runs were too much to overcome as the Bobcats defeated the RedHawks, 16-11, in the . Nurre hit a RBI double in the first inning, a grand slam in the second inning and a two-run home run in the sixth inning.

Miami struck in the top of the first to take an early 3-0 advantage. Junior Jordan Petraitis drilled a one-out triple to center field to place a runner in scoring position. Nurre quickly put Miami ahead as he hit a double to center field that plated Petraitis. During the next at-bat, junior J.D. Mynhier singled up the middle allowing Nurre to score, before he moved to second base on a fielding error by the centerfielder. Junior Chris Nadeau then hit a single down the left field line that scored Mynhier and upped Miami's lead to 3-0.

Ohio tied the game up in the bottom of the first inning courtesy of a three-run home run by Brandon Besl.

Just as Ohio tied the game, Miami jumped back on top in the second with a four-spot. Junior Josh Hula hit an infield single to start things off, before advancing to second base as sophomore Ben Eubank reached base on a fielder's choice. Freshman Adam Eaton reached base on an infield bunt single, which loaded the bases. After a strikeout, Nurre hit a grand slam over the right-center field wall that put the RedHawks ahead, 7-3. The home run was Nurre's sixth of the season.

Ohio got one back in the second inning as a solo home run by Zach Hartle, before a three-run home run by Robert Maddox in the third inning tied the game at 7-7.
 

 

With the bases loaded and one out in the fourth inning, Miami got a force out at home, but a throwing error plated two Bobcat runners and put Ohio ahead for the first time in the game, 9-7.

After a scoreless fifth inning, Miami jumped back on top courtesy of two RedHawk homers. Hula led the inning off with a solo home run over the left field wall, marking the third consecutive game that Hula has hit a home run. With two outs in the inning and Eubank standing on second base, Nurre belted his second home run of the game, which cleared a 30-foot batters eye in center field, catapulting Miami back on top, 10-9.

The RedHawks tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning on a sacrifice by freshman Adam Eaton, which plated freshman Brad Gschwind. However, Ohio scored five runs on three home runs to take a 14-11 lead into the eighth inning.

Ohio tacked on two runs on three hits in the eighth inning to increase its lead to 16-11.

Nurre went 3-for-5 from the plate with seven RBIs, becoming the first player since Eric Darlage on April 1, 2007 to drive in at least five RBIs in a game.

Both teams combined to hit nine home runs in the game.

The second game of today's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 5:45 p.m.
