RedHawks Fall to Rockets in Final Game of Weekend Series, 7-4

OXFORD, Ohio--Behind a five-run fourth inning, the University of Toledo baseball team recorded its second win in the final game of a three-game weekend series against Miami University with a 7-4 win at McKie Field on Sunday afternoon. The Rockets move to 7-10 overall and 2-1 in Mid-American Conference play, while the RedHawks drop to 5-13 overall and 1-2 in league action. Miami took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. With two outs, Chris Nadeau hit a single to get on base before Jordan Petraitis drilled a home run off the scoreboard in left field to lift the RedHawks to a 2-0 lead. It was Petraitis' third home run of the season. After two scoreless innings for both teams, Toledo had a big fourth inning. Aaron Dudley evened the score with a two-run homer, which also scored Jake Oester. With runners on the corners, Nate McKeon hit an RBI single to score Josh Johnson. Jake Swint nailed a two-RBI double to send Jared Hoying home from second and McKeon from first, upping the Rocket lead to 5-2. Miami closed the gap in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring two runs off two hits. Following a Jon Edgington single, Evan Armitage blasted a triple to score Edgington. Blake Chaffee hit a sacrifice fly on the next at-bat to allow Armitage to score and put the RedHawks within one run, 5-4. Niether team scored in the eighth inning, but the Rockets extended their lead in the top of the ninth, scoring two runs off four hits. Oester and Dudley each hit RBI singles to score Josh Colliver and Drew Hoisington, respectively, and give the Rockets a 7-4 lead.
The Rockets held the RedHawks scoreless in the bottom of the inning to preserve the 7-4 win. Ryan France earned the win for the Rockets, pitching 6.2 innings and giving up four runs off six hits to move to 3-2 on the season. Chris Fields pitched 2.1 innings in relief to earn his first save of the season. For the Rockets, Oester went 3-for-5 at the plate with one run and one RBI, while Colliver went 3-for-5 with one run. Tyler Melling earned the loss for the RedHawks, dropping to 0-2 on the season. Petraitis went 2-for-3 at the plate for the RedHawks with two RBIs and one run, while Edgington also went 2-for-3 with one run. Miami returns to action when it hosts Dayton at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26. |
